What is EatWell?

Placer County, along with local partners and CalRecycle, unveiled the EatWell app, an innovative opportunity for restaurants, cafes and food businesses to address food waste and food insecurity.

EatWell is a mobile app that connects edible food generators, such as restaurants, stores, schools, and hotel and hospital cafeterias, with people in need.

The app is only available to individuals and families screened by a community-based organization, ensuring that extra food is placed in the right hands.

Why EatWell?

California regulation (Senate Bill 1383) requires food generators of a certain size to recover the maximum amount of edible food that would otherwise be disposed of.

Barriers such as donation timing, logistics and storage challenges, or transporting perishable items can make donation difficult.

The EatWell app removes barriers and provides meals in a snap or a tap.

EatWell explained in 5 easy steps

  • Step one: Community-based organization partners will issue a code to community members in need.
  • Step two: The food generator with unsold food will post it on the EatWell app in a few quick taps.
  • Step three: The community member receives a notification when food is available in their area.
  • Step four: The community member will “claim” the food on the app and collect it within a specified time frame.
  • Step five: The food generator automatically collects a tax credit stored for future tax purposes.

Interested food generators are encouraged to sign up right away.
