What Happens to Green Waste?
Green waste brought to the Eastern Regional Landfill (ERL) is recycled, whether it's recovered from the mixed waste stream or brought in separately by residents and contractors. The material is processed to remove any trash or metals that might be mixed in, before being chipped. Most of the greenwaste is taken to biomass facilities to generate heat and electricity, but some is sold as woodchips for landscaping or used for compost.
